our practice
St Martins Medical Practice has been in its current location since the early 1980s, starting out in a converted weatherboard house, with two GPs. The practice grew over the years, gradually making it harder to fit all our services into the available space.
The old building was extensively damaged in the 2011 earthquakes, with the waiting room being replaced by a container in the rear car park for a while. The practice continued to grow, and with the closure of Opawa Medical Practice in 2018 we managed to accommodate new patients when Dr John Dewsbury joined us, prior to his retirement.
We were eventually able to build new premises next door and moved into our new purpose-built medical practice in 2019. Although we miss the character of the old building, we don’t miss the ivy growing through the walls! We finally had space for a staff room again, and felt fortunate to complete our new building prior to the stresses of Covid 19. The new building certainly made it easier to keep potentially contagious patients out of the waiting room, with the car park becoming an integral part of the practice as people waited in their cars. Despite our “new” building being twice the size of the old one, we have managed to rapidly fill the available space, with the addition of many new services.
Our doctors and nurses are now helped by a health care assistant and clinical assistant, and we have been able to add the services of a health improvement practitioner and health coach, as well as counselling, dietetics, occupational therapy, pharmacy and physiotherapy.
We hope to continue providing healthcare to the St Martins area for many years to come.
