repeat prescriptions
What is a repeat prescription?
A repeat prescription may be provided without a GP appointment for enrolled patients whose medications and health are stable.
From February 2026, prescribing rules will change. In most cases, your GP will now match the length of your prescription to when you next clinically need to be reviewed.
This means:
- you will usually not need to request repeat prescriptions between planned GP reviews
- your review schedule with your GP remains the same
- prescription length is based on clinical safety and best practice
Repeat prescriptions remain available when appropriate, but they are no longer the main way ongoing medications are managed.
When a longer prescription may be appropriate
A longer prescription (6–12 months) may be suitable if:
- your condition is stable and well-controlled
- your medication is considered safe for long-term use without frequent monitoring
- required screening, blood tests, and checks are up to date
- you have had a review appointment with your GP to ensure your medications and health are appropriately managed
- any outstanding fees are addressed or a support/payment plan arranged
When shorter prescriptions are usually safer
Shorter prescriptions (1–3 months) are often recommended for:
- medicines that need dose changes or titration
- conditions that can change over time
- newly started medications
- controlled / medications
- medicines that carry higher risks without regular review
- medicines that require ongoing monitoring, such as blood tests, blood pressure checks, or other health assessments
Pharmacy dispensing
Even if your prescription is written for longer than 3 months:
- pharmacies can only dispense up to 3 months at a time
- repeats must be collected from the same pharmacy
- changing pharmacies requires a new prescription
- some medicines may only be dispensed monthly, depending on the medicine or supply issues
- if a Special Authority number expires between 3-monthly dispensings, a new prescription from your GP will be required

If a repeat prescription is appropriate, the best way to request one is via the MyIndici patient portal.
You can also phone us on 337 0991 to be added to the Phone Nurse list, and a nurse will call you back to discuss your request.
